Group Management

Groups let you share datasets privately with your research team or farm. Members can view shared datasets without making them public.

What Are Groups?

Groups are private spaces for collaboration. When you share a dataset with a group, only members of that group can see it. This is perfect for:

  • Research teams working on weed detection projects
  • Farm operations sharing field images across locations
  • Universities collaborating on agricultural datasets
  • Agronomists sharing data with specific clients

Creating a Group

1

Navigate to Groups

Click Groups in the sidebar, then click Create Group.

2

Fill in group details

Enter the following information:

  • Group Name (required) – A descriptive name like “Western Australia Weed Research”
  • Description – Help others understand the group's purpose
  • Region – Geographic focus (optional, e.g., “Midwest USA”)
  • Visibility – Private (invite-only) or Public (anyone can request to join)
3

Click Create Group

You'll be redirected to your new group page where you can invite members.

Tip

Free accounts can create or join 1 group with up to 5 members. Upgrade for unlimited groups and members.

Inviting Members

Only group owners and admins can invite new members.

1

Click Invite

On your group's page, click the Invite button.

2

Enter email address

Enter the email address of the person you want to invite and click Send. An invitation link is generated.

3

Share the invitation

Share the invitation link via:

  • Copy link – Paste anywhere
  • WhatsApp – Opens WhatsApp with pre-filled message
  • SMS – Opens your SMS app
  • Email – Opens your email client

Invitations expire after 7 days. You can view and cancel pending invitations in the Invite dialog.

Note

The recipient needs a Noktura account to accept the invitation. If they don't have one, they'll be prompted to sign up.

Member Roles

Groups have three roles with different permissions:

Owner

  • Full control over the group
  • Can edit group name, description, and settings
  • Can invite members and manage roles
  • Can transfer ownership to another member
  • Can delete the group

Admin

  • Can invite new members
  • Can view all shared datasets
  • Cannot change group settings or delete the group

Member

  • Can view datasets shared with the group
  • Can share their own datasets with the group
  • Can leave the group at any time

Sharing Datasets with Groups

When you create or edit a dataset, you can share it with groups you belong to.

1

Set visibility to Groups

In the Sharing & Privacy section of the upload form, select Groups visibility.

2

Select groups

Choose which groups should have access. You can select multiple groups.

3

Set GPS visibility per group

For each group, choose the location visibility level:

  • All – Members see full GPS coordinates
  • Admins only – Only group admins see coordinates; members see region/country
  • None – No one sees coordinates (region/country still visible)

This lets you share images with different groups while controlling who sees sensitive farm locations. See GPS Privacy Controls for more details.

Tip

Datasets shared with groups appear on the group's page under “Shared Datasets”. Group members can browse, filter, and download these datasets.

Public Groups

Public groups are visible to all Noktura users. Anyone can browse public groups and request to join. This is useful for open research communities.

  • Browse public groups on the Groups page under “Explore Public Groups”
  • Public groups show their member count, dataset count, and description
  • Group owners can switch between private and public visibility in settings

Leaving or Deleting Groups

Leaving a Group

Any member (except the owner) can leave a group by clicking Leave Group on the group page. Your shared datasets remain accessible to the group.

Transferring Ownership

Owners cannot leave without transferring ownership first. Go to the group page, find the Danger Zone section, and select a new owner from the member list.

Deleting a Group

Only the owner can delete a group. This removes all group memberships but does not delete shared datasets – they return to the original owner's control.

Note

Deleting a group cannot be undone. Make sure all members have downloaded any datasets they need before deleting.
